Noise intrusion is ever increasing in today’s London. If your property is situated close to a busy road, or railway line or flight path for instance then secondary glazing is the answer. Sound through the air and radiates in all directions from the source gradually reducing in intensity or until it is stopped in its progress. The sound intensity is described in dB. A low dB indicates a soft sound, a high dB value indicates a loud sound. Depending on circumstance and efficiency of installation then various levels of noise reduction can be achieved. Glass types with increased acoustic values can be used the gain an increased reduction in dB value. 4mm, 6mm and laminated can achieve the desired reduction in noise intrusion with acoustic laminated achieving the greatest reduction.
Secondary glazing installed to an existing window with an average reduction of 26dB achieved already can have a further dramatic reduction. With the recommended 100mm air gap between the primary and secondary window the following reduction in dB value can be achieved.
4mm glass 39dB – 65% –
6mm glass 39dB – 65% – Estimated reduction in
Laminated 40dB – 70% – sound through window
Acoustic laminated 45% – 75% –
The most important aspect to gain any noise insulation is to ensure the secondary glazing system is of a high quality and the installation of the secondary window is efficient. ‘Ye Olde’ window company can ensure you of the highest quality product with expert installation.
‘Ye Olde’ secondary glazing system greatly reduces the heat escaping through your windows. Draughts through your windows contribute to a high percentage of overall heat escaping from your building and this can be reduced which in turn will undoubtably reduce your energy bills and thus reduce your own carbon footprint. The tight seals and tolerances incorporated into our secondary glazing system ensures cold air is kept out and the ever increasingly important warmth is kept in your property. Glass with a low emissivity {low E} coating greatly improves the heat reduction performance of the window and the heat escaping through the window.
U value is a means of comparing the heat loss through various parts of a building. The lower the U value the less heat is being lost A typical original primary window would expect to have a U value of around 5.5. With secondary glazing installed this can reduced to as low as 1.8. Different types of glass used during the manufacturing process can increase the level of heat that is reflected back into the room with low E glass having the best performance. Essentially the suns heat is let in and less of your property’s heat is let out. A reduced energy consumption in winter is achieved and also by keeping cool air in in summer the same applies. Cool air is kept in the building by the secondary glazing so less use of air conditioning and fans are needed which reduces the energy needed. Essentially a dramatic reduction in cool air escaping through your windows is achieved.
Additional security is paramount in today’s London and the benefit of secondary glazing is surprising to most. Firstly, the obvious inconvenience of an extra window that has to be entered is gained. Secondly, because laminated glass stays intact on impact it can provide additional protection against break in or vandalism. As with safety glass added security can be obtained with all glass types. Various locking mechanisms can also be fitted to add further security.
In most cases the windows are main feature of a property and this even more the case if your property falls into a conservation area or is a listed building. There is limited planning permission needed for the installation of secondary glazing and there is no structural change needed to the existing window or surrounding area. The windows are the eyes of any period building and we take great care in ensuring the character of the property is maintained. Each of our quality secondary units is uniquely designed to suit the existing window and to match and mirror it. With a bespoke design it is unobtrusive and barely visible once installed. If your property is listed or is located within a designated conservation area then planning permission might be need to be obtained in some cases. ‘Ye Olde’ London Window Company can advise you on your local authority’s conservation status without making a formal application saving time and money on unsuccessful application’s. We will ensure the character is preserved and the value of your property is maintained at the very least and in many cases the value even can be increased.
The popularity of glass which provides high level thermal insulation whilst at the same time reducing the amount of heat loss through the window has increased with more demanding environmental and legislative requirements. As a result of this highly efficient thermal insulation, it is possible for condensation to occur on the outer pane of the glass. The occurrence of external condensation on windows is proof that the insulating procedure is effectively working. We aim to keep condensation to a minimum with various procedures during manufacturing and installation whilst the low E coating is designed to delay, and in many cases, prevent the onset of condensation.
With the insulation of your windows and with the heat being reflected back into your property the amount of energy you use will decrease and reduce your future energy consumption. By protecting and preserving the life of your existing windows you can also contribute by keeping them out of landfill sites. Along with timber subframes, glass and aluminium are the key materials used in the manufacture of secondary glazing. Neither of these comes from sustainable sources and any scrap and off cuts are re-used and are part of the critically important recycling process of today. Your carbon emissions can be decreased by reducing air leakage in the existing window of your property and reducing radiation and conduction through the glazing and frame. Essentially, the installation of secondary glazing can help decrease your carbon footprint and help ensure the future of our ever-changing world.
Once a clean and quick installation of your secondary glazing is undertaken the Maintenace of the windows is minimal. The units are manufactured to the highest quality and are easy to clean and will function without any need for service for years to come. The parts and components of the secondary glazing are mostly factory sealed with lubricant during assembly and will not require any lubrication or service. In the unusual circumstance of occasional lubrication being required then it only needs a quick spray of proprietary silicone spray, such as WD-40 once in a while.
With the energy rating and the emergence of Energy Performance Certificates {EPC} the energy efficiency of your property is increasingly important. To buy, sell or rent out properties in the future this is without doubt going to be a major factor. The property energy rating is a standard measure of comparison by which one can evaluate the energy efficiency of a new or existing building. The comparison is generally done for energy requirements for heating and cooling for indoor space. The installation of secondary glazing will improve your property energy rating and improve your EPC performance.
‘Ye Olde’ secondary glazing can eliminate the futile resistance to time that old methods of window glazing usually provide. In these old methods of window glazing seals can become ineffective which in turn can cause draughts. Mould, ingress, vibration, pollen, dust and other airborne pollutants can consume your living space. Secondary glazing can eliminate these hazards and improve your standard of living and increase you, your family or employee’s life span. Essentially secondary glazing will improve air permeability. This defines the ability of the window to resist air penetration and will decrease the dirty air which seeps through your window.
‘Ye Olde’ secondary glazing is designed to mirror and compliment your primary window and once fitted they are not obtrusive. Every property is different so we take great care to specify the correct secondary glazing units for the individual primary window. They are installed to match in with specific decor and surrounds and come in any style and colour to suit the existing window and room.

Many companies will give predicted percentages of the level of noise that can be achieved. We believe this to be misleading and inconclusive due to each window and the area surrounding it different. To calculate the actual level of noise reduction would be impossible without assessing each problem and situation. Ye Olde London will only begin to predict an estimate of result after consultation and survey of each individual project. There are many factors involved that will ultimately affect the maximum possible level of reduction needed and required. Each circumstance will demand different action and procedure.

Any window that opens will create more noise intrusion than a fixed unit. Windows are a major cause of this intrusion but there are other factors that should be taken into consideration. Air vents, walls, floors, ceiling and chimney’s are all areas that can be acoustically improved. Hard surface décor, such as removing carpets or replacing heavy drapes with blinds are examples of contributing to this problem.
